Despite Mount Mitchell’s status as the tallest peak east of the Mississippi people keep trying to make it just a little taller. The observation platform recently dedicated by North Carolina’s state park system is at least the fifth tower to have been built on the mountain’s summit.

Although the platform was finished over the winter, the new structure has been getting an extended review as the weather warms and the busy summer season approaches.

Asheville-area residents could not get to the new platform easily until May 15, when workers opened one lane of a Blue Ridge Parkway section in the Craggy Gardens area that had been closed for a year and a half after a slide. (more…)

An abundance of rain in the region here in late spring has given us full creeks and nice waterfalls tumbling down to the Piedmont along with a prolific wildflower bloom. All of the districts are reporting great blooms so get your pencils ready here’s what’s being reported.

On the far north end of the Parkway, Mountain Laurel is now in peak bloom though this area. Goat’s Beard is starting to bloom; Catawba Rhododendron blooms are still visible in a few areas but are quickly waning. (more…)

The N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation announced the closing of the deal on Thursday in which the state bought 2,456 acres surrounding the popular attraction. The acreage is now officially North Carolina’s newest state park.

In March, the N.C. General Assembly unanimously approved the sale and Gov. Beverly Perdue signed the proposal into law on Marsh 31.

Although the state now owns the backcountry area of Grandfather Mountain, the Morton family will continue to operate the landmark as a non-profit in a deal that was announced in September. (more…)
