According to National Association of Realtors research economist George Ratiu, while almost every type of commercial or income property has had a rough going in the past two years, “the (rental) apartment sector continues to maintain a stronger performance compared with other sectors.” Those include office buildings, which have seen widespread property value declines — and retail real estate, which has been particularly hard hit as consumers penny-pinched during the recession and stayed away in droves.

During the second and third quarters of this year, demand for rental apartments as measured by net absorption, increased by more than 89,000 units nationwide. A year ago at this time, David Barlow was on “a walk of a lifetime,” as he calls it — and that’s saying a lot.

A Landis firefighter and retired teacher, Barlow has hiked in Alaska, Yosemite and the Tetons, to name a few places. He has climbed almost half way up Mount Ranier and has hiked “rim to river and back” in the Grand Canyon in one day on nine different occasions, once in a blinding snowstorm in March.

But his 42-day trek down the original Blue Ridge Parkway last September and October — raising awareness about Operation Christmas Child — surpasses all other trips for Barlow.

He was about a quarter of the way through his journey at this time last year. “I can smell it in the air,” Barlow says. “I wish I could go back out there. … I would drop everything and go right now.” (more…)

When the federal government announced half a billion dollars in grants last week to help develop wind-energy projects, more than a few land investors and farm owners around the country probably picked up the sweet scent of cash. That’s because wind farming is the hot new sideline source of income shaping up for potentially thousands of landowners whose acreage happens to be in the right place. Wind projects are high on the Obama administration’s list of renewable energy to encourage — even subsidize — in the coming two decades.

Wind energy generation companies are on the prowl for acreage where they can install turbines, ideally in locations that have average year-round wind speeds of eleven to thirteen miles per hour. If the acreage also happens to be in the general vicinity of existing high-power electrical transmission lines, and not too remote from population centers, that’s all the better. (more…)
